Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion

Heat exhaustion symptoms can gradually develop over time, or they can occur in an instant. These symptoms tend to be more visible after prolonged exercising in environments with excessive heat. Although the symptoms can vary depending on the person, here are some common symptoms linked to heat exhaustion:

  • Heavy sweating
  • Weak, rapid pulse
  • Faintness and dizziness
  • Headaches and nausea
  • Muscle cramps

Causes of Heat Exhaustion

You may experience heat exhaustion if your body temperature increases drastically and you cannot cool yourself down. This mostly happens during the hot summer seasons, where temperatures are at their highest.

Typically, the human body cools itself by sweating. When a person sweats, it helps to control the body temperature. However, your body may be incapable of adequately cooling itself when participating in intense training or overexerting in hot and humid weather conditions. Therefore, you can get heat cramps which gradually develop into heat exhaustion.

Other causes of heat exhaustion are dehydration, overdressing, and alcohol consumption.

Obesity

Excess weight interferes with the body’s ability to control temperature, thus retaining more heat.

Age

Children aged five years or below and older people above 65 are more susceptible to heat exhaustion than any other group. For young children, their body’s ability to regulate internal temperature is not yet fully developed. On the other hand, the elderly’s ability to regulate temperature is affected by sicknesses, medications, or other factors.
